Bitumen Emulsion RS-1 is a fast-setting anionic asphalt emulsion designed to rapidly fracture and harden upon contact with rock surfaces, becoming immediately unstable.
Bitumen Emulsion RS-1 is a low viscosity, fast-setting anionic, water-based emulsified asphalt containing a minimum of 57% bitumen, intended for use as a bituminous binder for chip seals and bond coats.
Asphalt emulsions are classified by the electrical charge around the emulsion's asphalt particles (i.e., whether it is a cationic or anionic emulsion) and by how quickly the suspended asphalt particles separate ("fracture") from the surrounding water. A slow-setting emulsion is designed to maximize mixing time with rock aggregates.
Longer working times ensure a good coating on dense rock aggregates with high fines content. The setting speed of each emulsion depends on the atmospheric conditions at the time of construction.
General product characteristics
- Seals narrow cracks against moisture ingress
- Traffic can be restored very soon after application.
- Excellent for use in early spring and late fall.
- Effective bonding/adhesion prevents slipping between
- paving layers.
- Ideal for use with small, portable sprayers.
Application of RS-1 Anionic Bitumen Emulsion
The anionic emulsion is generated by an electric field. In an anionic emulsion, the droplets migrate from the anode. RS-1 Anionic Bitumen Emulsion is a slow setting, anionic type of bitumen. The particle size of the emulsion is 0.1 to 5 microns and the emulsifier normally used to make RS-1 anionic asphalt emulsion is an alkaline salt with ammonium salt that brings bitumen and water droplets together.
RECOMMENDED USE
RS-1 cures quickly to form dry asphalt films, making it ideal for spray applications such as tack coats, spray patches, sand seals, mist seals and shoulder maintenance.
Application Guidelines
- Clean asphalt surface and treat oil stains prior to
- application to ensure proper adhesion.
- Do not apply if precipitation is expected.
- Do not dilute product with cutting material or water.
- Spray rate depends on application type.
- Contact a RAHA GROUP sales representative for application temperature guidelines.
DESIGN GUIDELINES
Sand seal designs should be reformatted before initial production and each time the sand source is changed. To ensure a quality seal, testing of the final products is highly recommended. RAHA GROUP Services provides comprehensive mix design and product quality analysis services.
